Old Bay Seasoning
Yields: ¼ cup
I grew up on Old Bay Classic Seafood Seasoning. My mom used it all the time when making many of her seafood recipes. It’s a southern thing, for sure. I love it, and I used to buy the McCormick & Co. brand. Sadly, it’s full of salt, and other undisclosed ingredients. So I “Garden of Eydie-it”! This homemade blend is pretty close to the original and a go to when making plant-based “seafood mimicking” dishes. It’s salt free and healthy in every way.

Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon celery seed
- 2 teaspoons sweet paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 5 bay leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground mace
- ⅛ teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/16 teaspoon ground allspice (a tiny pinch)
- 1/16 teaspoon ground clove (a tiny pinch)
Directions
Place all of the ingredients in a spice grinder and grind until very fine. Transfer the spice blend to a jar and store in a dark, cool place for up to 6 months.
Homemade salt and sugar free spice blends make for a thoughtful gift for friends and family trying to avoid these ingredients.
